Mercy: The Last New England Vampire
VOYA’s Top Shelf Fiction for Middle School Readers

B&N Best Young Adult Fiction of 2011

Why the flaming heart?
Author Sarah L. Thomson wanted to write about a time when vampires were not equated with irrational romance, but with irrational fear.  Thomson incorporated the true story of 19-year-old Mercy Brown who in 1892 (while her New England community was being devastated by tuberculosis) was pulled from her tomb and had her heart cut out and burned.  Grim.  Why did her former neighbors do this?  They thought Mercy was not “quite dead” and was rising from her tomb to suck the life out of them.  Teenagers, such a drain!  Read more on book’s site.
